Park Ridge Insider Zach Haycraft on Nonna Silvia’s specials, getting a round in at Mt. Prospect Golf Club, steaks at Devon Avenue Meats and escapes to Sister Bay in Door County
What you do for a living: It’s a corporate America gig. Specifically, I work in reinsurance for CNA (a commercial property and casualty carrier in Chicago). I have been there awhile now. My wife likes to joke that I started my career at CNA in the previous millennium.
How long you’ve lived here: I moved to Park Ridge a little over 11 years ago.
What you like best about Park Ridge: Quite a bit. First, the transformation to a dining-friendly city was a welcome change. When I moved here, you had to leave town to get a decent cocktail or meal. But that changed when Holt’s opened and the others followed. Secondly, the overall community vibe is extraordinary. I have met a lot of people throughout my time here, and the character of the people is usually outstanding. I also love that it’s connected to Chicago. We like to get back to the city and it’s easy to do living here. It’s also huge for us to be able to get to Wisconsin in under an hour.
Best meal you’ve had recently: It was Sopra Bistro in Lake Geneva. We were up there for my wife’s birthday, and it was perfect. The crispy half duck and sage risotto cake were delicious. One of those meals that makes its way into a “good eats memory,” and I can’t wait to get back.
Favorite restaurant in the area: Nonna Silvia’s. They are so consistent, and it’s always an enjoyable dining experience. I am a big fan of their specials. They are constantly bringing new things to the table, and it’s fun to see what they will come up with next.
Favorite “hidden gem” restaurant: I don’t know if it’s a hidden gem, but we have been enjoying Friday lunches at Mac’s diner on Higgins. Eating at the counter, watching the team work and having the friendly wait staff chatting you up. It’s an absolute joy to spend your lunch there.
Best bar to grab a drink or to catch the game: Harp and Fiddle. It’s got the best bar to belly up to and get into a couple of drinks while watching the games. Easy Street Pizza’s not far behind — and a welcome addition to South Park.
A great night out with friends usually includes… everything we are talking about here. Lively conversation, good eats, tasty cocktails. At my age, comfortable seating and not having to shout to be heard is an absolute must. Park Ridge has that nailed (once the planes become white noise).
A peak Saturday in the spring would be a hike or bike ride on the Des Plaines River trail. Get nine holes in with the family at Glenview Prairie Club. Grab some steaks from Devon Avenue Meats, open a nice bottle and grill outside.
The best way to spend a Saturday in the spring: After a Chicago winter, I am going to listen to “Go Outside” by Cults. I am breaking up with my indoor winter hibernation. A peak Saturday would be a hike or bike ride on the Des Plaines River trail. Get nine holes in with the family at Glenview Prairie Club. Grab some steaks from Devon Avenue Meats, open a nice bottle and grill outside. Finish the night with a campfire, s’mores and a solid indie playlist that hits just right.
What’s something you look forward to every spring?
The return to golf is No. 1. My top local course is Mt. Prospect Golf Club. They tricked those greens out a couple of years ago, and it’s a lot of fun to play. The Highlands of Elgin is my absolute favorite Chicagoland course. It’s hard to believe you are in the flatlands of Illinois when you get out there. It’s amazing, always in near perfect conditions, and a terrific value play.
Secret spot: Orangetheory Fitness in Park Ridge. I realize it’s a national chain, but the coaches and the members are locals, and it’s a fantastic place to get your exercise in. An hour flies by, and before you know it, you have burned enough calories to enjoy all of the food and drinks Park Ridge has to offer. Just be sure to grab a quick shower first because you are going to leave a sweaty mess!

Underrated activity in the area: The Park Ridge Public Library is awesome and deserves a shoutout. There are a lot of excellent resources in there, and you definitely need to check it out (pun intended).
Weekend getaway spot: Wisconsin. I love being a FIB and spending our money up there. I enjoy all that state has to offer (save for the Packers … they can rot, but it appears they never will). Our top spot is Door County, specifically Sister Bay, and the free music offered along the waterfront on different weeknights in the summer. Also The Cove or Lake Lawn Resort for shorter getaways in the Geneva area. Cafe Benelux or the 3rd Street Market Hall hit the spot when we see concerts in Milwaukee every year.
What have you heard great things about but have yet to try? I am very excited that Chicago Ramen has arrived Park Ridge. I have been to their Des Plaines location, and its legit awesome. Hopefully it thrives in their new spot. If you are like me, I’m always happier with a belly full of yummy noodles.
