Park Ridge Insider Lisa Kay Kovilic on the Zia’s Social brunch, sound bath meditation sessions at Vitality Wellness, unique gifts at Raffia and escapes to New Buffalo, Michigan
Zia’s Social brunch
What you do for a living: I am a photographer with Lisa Kay Photography. I specialize in headshots and branding photos for small businesses. I am passionate about helping other entrepreneurs grow their businesses through dynamic images that attract their ideal clients.
How long you’ve lived here: I have lived in the area for seven years. My husband grew up in Park Ridge, we met in Chicago and eventually migrated back to the area. He laughs now that I know more people in Park Ridge than he does.
What you like best about Park Ridge: Hands down, the connections and friends I have made here. When I moved here, I knew I wanted to network more in the area and heard great things about the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber has helped me get to know the community, and I have made some great friends in the process.
Best meal you’ve had recently: The burrata and basil pizza at Holt’s is outstanding! I like to pair it with the kale and Brussels sprout salad. The food and the service at Holt’s is always great.

Favorite restaurant in the area: You can’t go wrong with Harp & Fiddle. Especially in the winter, their comfort food (like the shepherd’s pie) just hits the spot. I also love the welcoming atmosphere and live music.
Favorite “hidden gem” restaurant: Friends recently introduced me to Pines Room — who knew Park Ridge had its very own speakeasy? The cozy, candlelit atmosphere and amazing drinks make it a win-win. As is the case with any good speakeasy, it is a tight place, so try to get there early to get a seat.
Best bar to grab a drink or to catch the game: Zia’s Social in nearby Norwood Park has an amazing brunch where you can also catch the games on Sundays.
A great night out with friends usually includes… dinner and drinks nearby. I recently went to an amazing dinner at Pazzi di Pizza and followed it up with a nightcap at Patina Wine Bar. When I moved here, I assumed we would be heading back to the city for amazing restaurants, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Park Ridge has so many great options for a wonderful night out.
The best way to spend a Saturday in the winter: I’m a big believer in self-care. I love to treat myself to a facial at Lamaris Salon in Edison Park. My skin always glows after the treatment. I would follow that up with a sound bath meditation session from Star Sound Baths held at Vitality Wellness Acupuncture. Even if you are new to meditation, you will walk away feeling so relaxed. They hold these every month, and I always try to make it a priority.

What’s something you look forward to every winter?
The holiday decor and lights in Uptown Park Ridge is always so beautiful and gets me into the holiday spirit. This winter, I am also going to try snowshoeing. With all the gorgeous forest preserves in our area, I’m excited to try something new.
Favorite local store or best shopping area: I love to take a day and hit up all of the Uptown shops. Some of my favorites are 2 Sisters, Edie Boutique, and you can always find unique gifts at Raffia. If I don’t have time to shop myself, I love to use Thoughtful Presence, a local company that creates custom gift baskets for any occasion.
Secret spot: Shawarma Inn for a great meal or carry-out. If you like Middle Eastern food, this is a must try. This casual eatery is a great choice for a weeknight when you don’t want to cook.
Centered Clay Collective is a ceramic studio that offers classes, after-school workshops and a really unique date-night experience. I have been here with friends, and we had such a good time getting creative.
Underrated activity in the area: Centered Clay Collective, a ceramic studio that offers classes, after-school workshops and a really unique date-night experience. I have been here with friends, and we had such a good time getting creative. There is something about getting tactile with the clay that makes you feel like a kid again. I plan to go back for a fun date night soon (everyone remembers the movie Ghost!).
Weekend getaway spot: New Buffalo, Michigan. I am originally from Michigan, and I love to get back to my beautiful home state. My perfect day there is hiking in the morning, lunch at Beer Church Brewing Co. and a bonfire on the beach for the sunset.
What have you heard great things about but have yet to try?
The new Social 18 on Main Street here in Park Ridge. I took up golf a couple years ago, and I’m excited to hear that Park Ridge now has a spot with great food and a golf simulator.
