Q&A with owner Annika Schmidt

Q: What led to you wanting to start Sip N’ Play here in town?

A: I opened Sip N’ Play because I truly wanted the families of Park Ridge to have a special place right here in town — somewhere close to home where parents can bring their children without having to travel far. I envisioned a cozy, thoughtfully designed space where parents can relax, connect or even get a little work done, all while knowing their children are safely engaged nearby — not running wild in a huge, overwhelming environment.

As a teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how important imaginative play is for a child’s development. Creativity builds confidence, problem-solving skills and social growth. I wanted to create a space that nurtures that in a natural and joyful way.

Q: Tell us a bit about what your studio offers both kids and parents.

A: Sip N’ Play is designed with both children and parents in mind. For kids, we offer imaginative playhouses — including a grocery store, firehouse and animal hospital — where they can explore different roles, build social skills, and let their creativity shine. The environment is safe, engaging and intentionally set up to encourage meaningful play.

For parents, we provide a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere where they can enjoy a coffee, catch up on work, or simply take a breath while still being present with their child. It’s a space that supports the whole family, giving children room to grow and parents a chance to relax.

Q: What plans do you have down the road?

A: We’re really excited about what’s ahead for Sip N’ Play. One of our biggest goals is to continue building strong partnerships within the Park Ridge community. We plan to collaborate with local businesses by offering free one-hour play passes, creating fun ways for families to discover and support one another.

We’re also looking forward to partnering with the Park Ridge Library for special story times in our space, which will be such a wonderful addition for our little ones. We just ordered physical gift cards so parents can easily share Sip N’ Play with friends and family. For our private parties, we’ve partnered with a balloon vendor to elevate the celebration experience even more. And something we know the kids will absolutely love — we’re planning special visits from some of their favorite characters!

Renata Karkut, owner of the popular Renata’s Organic Skincare on Devon Avenue in South Park, had long wanted to create a boutique space beyond traditional retail — in other words, “a space for women to reconnect with themselves through beauty, ritual and community.”

And she did just that in the fall of 2025, launching Anima Haus, with the inspiration coming from her Polish roots, as a lifestyle boutique where beauty, wellness and community come together to support healing, confidence and belonging.

Every item we carry is chosen with care, emphasizing quality over quantity, natural materials, conscious production and emotional intimacy.” — Renata Karkut

At the bright and inviting boutique, you’ll find thoughtfully chosen brands that support intentional living and everyday rituals like European lingerie and loungewear, artisan-crafted treasures, ceremonial wellness products and self-care essentials.

“Every item we carry is chosen with care, emphasizing quality over quantity, natural materials, conscious production and emotional intimacy,” Renata tells us.

In addition, in the not-so-distant future, you can expect gatherings and events as well, including private shopping experiences, educational talks on women’s health and holistic wellness, themed workshops, cacao ceremonies, and soundwork and breathwork circles.

If you’ve spent time in the Fashion Outlets in Rosemont or HIP Mall in Norridge, you probably know the name already because it’s a big hit in the food courts. And now the chain has added on with a new Uptown Park Ridge location, taking over the former Cream of the Crepe space next to Pazzi di Pizza and the Pickwick. With a focus on simple, fresh ingredients, Mari Pari offers a new take on traditional European-inspired street food. Think kebabs, baguette sandwiches, French crepes, Angus burgers, homemade pastries, soups and more.
