Local charity spotlight: Have Dreams celebrates 30 years of helping those with autism reach their full potential

Celebrating 30 years of offering a variety of programs and services to help those with autism reach their full potential
A little history: Back in 1996, a group of parents and a special education teacher gathered around a kitchen table in Park Ridge with a shared vision. At a time when autism awareness and resources were limited, they created Have Dreams, a unique after-school social-skills program for children with autism.
Our focus: Today, Have Dreams offers a wide range of programs and services, including after-school social-skills programs (SCILS); adult services such as workforce training through the Have Dreams Academy and the full-day Life SCILS program; counseling and employment services; a free parent-support group; professional trainings and webinars; free educational resources and visual supports; and educational advocacy services that help families navigate special education and school-based supports.
Our mission remains focused on helping autistic individuals learn, build independence, socialize and reach their full potential as contributing members of their communities.
Evolving as we grow: Since our founding in 1996, Have Dreams has continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of the autism community. As children with autism grow into adults, our programs have expanded to support individuals across all stages of life. Our mission remains focused on helping autistic individuals learn, build independence, socialize and reach their full potential as contributing members of their communities.

Mental health support: Another important area of growth has been mental-health counseling. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Have Dreams saw a significant increase in requests for mental-health support and expanded services to meet that need. Today, we are proud to have six therapists providing in-person and virtual counseling sessions, along with a free monthly support group for parents and caregivers.
Upcoming events:
Have Dreams Golf Classic, September 14
Decades of Dreams — Have Dreams 30th anniversary, October 17
