Comfort, safety and cleanliness have been at the core of this business for nearly 40 years

Q: Vertical Chimney has been in business for nearly four decades. Explain what that level of experience — and expertise — means.

A: Having served the area for 40 years means we have always been, and remain, a trusted name. We have earned the trust of homeowners and get invited back time and again. Our chimney sweeps are certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), and our masons and technicians have 15-plus years of experience. Our expertise brings comfort to our customers, and they know we’ll have the best solutions and the work will be done right.

Q: What are company’s specialties?

A: Our main specialty is chimney inspections and cleaning. Our video inspections play a crucial part in identifying any issues within the chimney. Masonry is another specialty; a chimney is only as good as its overall structure. From the brickwork to the chimney cap, our team at Vertical will make sure your chimney is in proper working order — both inside and out.

With our chimney scans, we use a live feed on a camera using state-of-the-art technology and provide homeowners with a detailed report that includes safety issues and suggestions for cleaning, repairs and more.

Q: How important is maintaining your chimney to your home’s safety and your health?

A: It is very important to maintain your chimney, especially if you use the fireplace regularly. Burning fires can leave a level of creosote in the chimney, that if left untreated, could potentially result in an unwanted fire. Additionally, it’s crucial to identify any flue obstructions that could block ventilation and push carbon monoxide back into your home. Vertical prides itself on ensuring homeowners feel safe in their homes.

Q: Explain what is involved in a chimney sweep and your accompanying video inspection.

A: After an initial visual inspection both inside and out, we insert a large metal brush from the bottom up. Once the brush has cleaned out the flue of the chimney, we used a double-filter vacuum to clean the smoke shelf and any residual dust. Following that, we’ll brush down the walls of the firebox and complete another round of vacuuming. Then we’ll do a video scan of the chimney’s interior to detect any hidden problems. We use a live feed on a camera using state-of-the-art technology. It checks for any additional buildup and cracks or missing mortar. We provide homeowners with a detailed report that includes our findings, safety issues and suggestions for cleaning, repairs and more. Safety and cleanliness are at the core of this entire process.

Regular dryer vent cleanings can improve energy efficiency and ensure any flammable lint doesn’t catch fire. … We also offer gas log fireplaces should you no longer want to deal with wood-burning fireplaces.

Q: What other tasks do you tackle for the homeowner?

A: On top of all we do related to the chimney — from masonry restoration to full chimney repair, we also offer dryer vent cleaning. Regular dryer vent cleanings can improve energy efficiency and ensure any flammable lint doesn’t catch fire. Your dryer can last longer with regular cleanings too. Vertical also offers gas log fireplaces should you no longer want to deal with wood-burning fireplaces. And we proudly offer retractable awnings, which can help to better enjoy the warmer months. When you think Vertical, think comfort and safety.

Wondering what’s happening to the old @thalaivasin Wondering what’s happening to the old @thalaivasindiankitchen space on Main Street? During a recent lunch, we were filled in on the plans for Mandram, which means “a place where people gather.”

Operated by the owners of the popular Thalaiva’s, we’re told to expect an assortment of small sandwiches and kati rolls (a type Indian wrap with butter chicken or chicken tikka masala inside), as well as customized fresh juices blended in front of you and milkshakes made of dried fruit and nuts.

Keep an eye out for the upcoming fall issue of The Real Park Ridge for more details about Mandram, opening in September.

The southwest chicken salad at @howardstreetinn

Keeping it light: This is not your normal sports bar menu. Far from it, actually, and it’s easy to fall in love with a new dish each time you stop by. The menu is that robust. Perfect for summer, in our mind, is the southwest chicken salad that has grilled chicken breast topped with fresh pico de gallo, corn and grated cheddar served over a bed of chopped romaine lettuce — all packed in a crispy baked tortilla shell. Throw on a little spicy ranch dressing and pair with a cold draft beer and you’re set. And pretty guilt free.

And did we mention Howard Street has arguably the best daily drink specials in the area?
